Boise is not a comedy town the way Chicago or Austin is a comedy town. It is something more interesting: a city big enough that national headliners will route through it, and small enough that when they do, you are sitting close enough to see them think.

Here is how live stand-up actually works here, and how to find the show you want.

The shape of a comedy night

Almost every stand-up show you will see, anywhere, follows the same three-part structure. A host opens, welcomes the room and warms it up. A feature act does fifteen or twenty minutes. Then the headliner — the name on the ticket — does the bulk of the show.

The whole thing runs about ninety minutes. That structure exists because it works: a cold room is hard to play to, and the host's job is to hand the headliner a crowd that is already laughing.

It also means you get three comics for the price of one ticket, and the feature act is often someone worth remembering.

Touring headliners versus local shows

Two different nights out, and it is worth knowing which one you are buying.

A touring headliner is a comic working a polished hour they have performed hundreds of times. If they have a Netflix special, a late-night set or a Comedy Central credit, this is what you are getting. The material is tight. The show is a known quantity.

At The Comedy Lounge these are usually the Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows, and they are why the club exists — our talent buyer spent nearly two decades booking the Boise Funny Bone, which is how a room this size lands names that would otherwise skip Idaho entirely.

A local showcase is looser. Several comics, shorter sets, newer material. Some of it is being tried out in front of an audience for the first time, which is exactly as exciting and as risky as it sounds. This is where you see someone before they are anyone.

Both are worth your time. They are just not the same evening.

How to pick a comic you will actually like

This is the part most people skip, and it is the single thing that most determines whether you have a good night.

Comedians are not interchangeable. Someone doing clean, warm crowd work and someone doing dark material about their divorce are both excellent at their jobs, and you will enjoy exactly one of them on a given Tuesday.

So: look them up. Every show on our calendar has its own page with a bio and credits. Two minutes on YouTube will tell you more than any description we could write. If the clip makes you laugh, buy the ticket.

When shows happen

Our regular nights are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with shows popping up Sunday through Wednesday when a tour routes through. Doors open an hour before showtime; a 7:00 show means 6:00 doors.

The practical advice: buy online, because tickets are five dollars cheaper than at the door, and arrive 30 to 40 minutes early. Most shows are general admission, so early arrival is the difference between the third row and the back.

What it costs

Tickets vary by act. On top of that there is a two-drink minimum per person — drinks run $3 to $10 and do not have to be alcoholic. Food comes from BBQ4LIFE, with carnivore and vegan options, ordered before the show starts.

If the drink minimum seems like an odd rule, there is a real reason for it, and it is more interesting than "because we said so".

Where we are

2417 Bank Dr, inside the Gem Center for the Arts, about two and a half miles from downtown just off Vista and Overland. Roughly 180 free parking spaces around the building. The Washer Woman sign at Vista and Bank is your landmark for the turn.

The building does not look like a comedy club. Everyone says so. Come down the stairs anyway — or take the elevator on the ground floor.
